"An interactive dance performance"

The Word

Team Work (role: Art director and Lead developer) | May 2017

Performance | Projection Mapping

Tools: JavaScript, P5.js, Node.js, HTML, Kinect2, Kinectron, 2 Projectors

Real-time body tracking interactive sketches, collaborated with a professional dancer, So Young Park, and a production manager, Manning Qu. My roles were an Art director and a Lead creative coder. We placed a Kinect2 in front of the dancer, and used Kinectron, which is a node-based library for Kinect. It captures all the body joints and registers their positions into data. Then Kinectron (server-side) sends the data into my sketch (client-side) using peer to peer communication via WebRTC (web real-time communication).  Using the body joints data of the dancer, I made interactive sketches that reacted to her head and hands using JavaScript, P5.js, and HTML, and mapped the data onto the wall and the floor using MadMapper and two projectors.

This piece is divided into six sections and each section has different sketches projected on the wall and on the ground. On the wall, particles representing sparkles and clouds follow her right hand. On the floor, a mesh blanket wrinkles as she rolls on the floor. A spotlight follows her and sparkles about her footsteps with a long light path at the end. Her joyful movements on the light path illustrates that there is always a hope after a long period of tribulation and hardship.

"The moments of life are sometimes alone and difficult, and we encounter hardships and obstacles, but we can embrace them.. Following the Word - Light, a path that guides and shines the path of life, is the hope to follow it." - The Word
